Job Summary

$45,704 / year or higher DOQ + Full-Time County Benefits 

Performs professional work assisting with all aspects of the Department’s communications, media and community relations, public information and marketing.

Responsibilities

• Assists with managing social media channels for various Parks & Recreation divisions; maintains and implements new tactics and overall strategy to include daily social media posts/content, creating ads, managing events and responding to customer comments and messages; monitoring trends and analytics.
• Assists with proofreading and editing of all staff generated mass media information releases including electronic/digital and print marketing efforts; develops, may respond to media and general public requests for information, including media outlets and general public.
• Assists in promoting the County as a destination and coordinates County marketing efforts with regional and state marketing strategies to maximize dollars, reach and tourism efforts.
• Provides first point of customer service in-person, by telephone and online, answering routine questions regarding volunteering, sponsorships, advertising, social media requests and other requests for information.
• Coordinates and develops staff training in communication behaviors and the production of marketing initiatives; assists Department staff in preparing presentations and display exhibits for County boards and commissions televised meetings and for speaker bureau citizen groups.
• Assists with managing the Department’s digital bulletin boards and recruiting and securing sponsorships for Parks & Recreation Department events, programs and park amenities; manage the Department’s sponsor and advertising agreements.
• Assists in the preparation and execution of special Parks & Recreation events, including groundbreakings, ribbon cuttings, community meetings, news conferences, programs and other events; serves on internal and external teams and committees.
• Serves as full-time backup to Senior Communications & Marketing Specialist; assists divisions with appropriate messaging for print and digital media, as assigned; provides clerical and administrative support to Department staff as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma; some experience in working in communications, social media, marketing and public relations preferred.
• Must possess, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County criteria.
• Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures, equipment, and clerical techniques; general office computer software and associated equipment; knowledge of principles and processes for providing customers service including setting and meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
• Skill in use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite and Canva; some knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud software (i.e., Illustrator, InDesign, Adobe Premiere and Adobe Photoshop).
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; apply Associated Press and County style guidelines; edit communications for grammar, spelling, punctuation and tone; effectively complete work and multitask with frequent interruptions; and, appropriately handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality; collaborate with diverse teams and groups of employees and citizens.
