The Automotive Service Intern will assist with basic tasks related to vehicle and equipment servicing. Interns will work under the direct supervision of experienced technicians, receiving guidance and training through written and verbal instructions to ensure a safe and educational experience.

The Fleet & Equipment division operates Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. Internship runs from June 16th, 2026 to August 14th, 2026.

Responsibilities

• Under the instruction and supervision of a designated instructor, learns about servicing cars, trucks, and other equipment with fluids and grease.
• Shadows a trained technician to learn techniques in removing, repairing, inflating, balancing, and replacing tires on automotive vehicles and grounds equipment.
• Becomes familiar with checking and cleaning radiators and adding water or antifreeze when necessary.
• Learns about emptying used oil and antifreeze containers for proper recycling.
• Assists in checking batteries and adding water when necessary.
• Gains experience in cleaning engine compartments and major components.
• Keeps the shop area in and around the building clean and organized.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Must be a current high school senior or enrolled in an Automotive program, and have some experience with automotive vehicles.
• Some knowledge of the less complex repair and service of automotive and grounds equipment.
• Some knowledge of the basic mechanical operation of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and of the equipment and supplies used to service them.
• Ability to properly care for and use tools and equipment used in the automotive industry. • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; follow both verbal and written instructions; establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with staff and the public; make accurate mathematical calculations; independently apply and carry out policies and procedures.
• Ability to drive a variety of vehicles.
• Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
