The Hiring Process

For most positions, the hiring process consists of an application review, interview, reference checks, and a criminal background check. Depending on the role and scope of responsibilities, some positions may also require a drug screen, driving record check, verification of credentials, physical exam, or more extensive background checks.   • Full-Time: Full-time employees typically work 40 hours per week, are paid an annual salary and can be either exempt or non-exempt from overtime pay. James City County’s Full-Time employees are eligible for full County benefits, including enrollment in the Virginia Retirement System. 
  • Part-Time: Part-time employees work less than 40 hours per week (typically between 10-20 hours), are paid hourly, and are eligible for partial County benefits. Part-Time positions are great opportunities for candidates who need a more flexible schedule that can accommodate other commitments.
  • On-Call: On-call positions do not have a set schedule per week and their hours are dependent on the needs of the department. 
  • Seasonal: Seasonal positions are those that have a specified start and end date, with a schedule based on the needs of the department. Seasonal positions are popular with students and retirees who enjoy a flexible work opportunity that involves staying active during specific set times of the year.
  • Temporary: Temporary positions also have a start and end date, with the possibility of extension based on the needs of the department and available funding.
