Job Summary
$18.00 - $36.00 / Hour, DOQ. On-Call positions, up to 28/hrs. weekly.
Performs responsible work planning, executing and/or instructing water fitness classes or other recreational programs for families and individuals of a variety of ages and abilities. There are three levels of Instructor distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee.
Responsibilities:
• Works under the supervision of the Aquatics Supervisors.
• Plans, leads, and instructs water fitness classes that are safe, effective, and engaging for participants of all fitness levels.
• Provides modifications and progressions to accommodate varying abilities, ensuring an inclusive environment.
• Maintains a high level of awareness and safety for all participants during class.
• Demonstrates proper exercise techniques and promotes overall health and wellness.
• Builds positive relationships with participants while maintaining a professional and encouraging atmosphere.
• Arrives prepared for each class with structured programming and appropriate class/equipment setup
• Monitors class attendance and submits required documentation as needed.
• Ensures equipment is used properly, maintained, and stored appropriately after each class.
• Attends required staff trainings and meetings.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Current Water Fitness Instructor Certification (e.g., AEA, FITour, or equivalent).
• Previous experience teaching group fitness or water fitness classes preferred.
• Strong knowledge of water exercise principles, fitness programming, and participant safety.
• Ability to motivate, engage, and communicate effectively with diverse populations.
• Must possess, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria.
• May require possession, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire, First Aid and Cardiopulmonary. Resuscitation (CPR) certifications from the American Red Cross.
• May require certification(s) in class/program topic, such as aerobics, personal training, lifeguard instruction, swim instruction, water safety instruction, archery, and canoeing from approved certificating organization.
