Job Summary
$71,354 / year or higher DOQ + Full-Time County Benefits
Performs experienced work inspecting new and remodeled residential dwellings and commercial buildings in multiple trades to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local ordinances.
Responsibilities
• Interprets codes and regulations pertaining to the assigned construction discipline; instructs customers in proper use of governing codes and inspection procedures.
• Assists Plan Review Section Chief with plan reviews; performs plans review for residential and commercial structures when assigned.
• Maintains effective relationships with inspectors, plans examiners, contractors, building owners, special inspectors, and the public.
• Provides technical training for contractors, inspectors and plans examiners.
Qualifications:
• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma, preferably supplemented by courses in building construction technology, engineering or architecture; considerable experience in inspecting or supervising commercial building construction.
• Must possess, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria.
• Must obtain within 12 months of hire Commercial Building Inspector certification from the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
• Must possess, within 24 months of hire, Commercial Energy Inspector and Amusement Device Inspector certifications from the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
• Must possess, or be able to obtain within 36 months of hire, Commercial Building Plan Review certification from the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
• Must have demonstrated knowledge of standard practices, methods, processes and tools used in building construction, including standard formulas of structural stability and safety and accepted safety standards; and methods of inspection and the basic principles of statics and equilibrium as applied to heavy construction, and the ability to apply proper inspection building inspection methods; read and interpret plans, specifications; deal tactfully with building contractors and workers.
• Knowledge of codes, principles, techniques, and equipment used in electrical installations; and, effective corrective measures; principles and processes for providing customer service including setting and meeting quality standards for services; evaluation of customer satisfaction.
• Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire protection and elevator systems.
• Skill in use of computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; prepare and present technical information clearly; establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional colleagues, employees, representatives of other public agencies, and the public.
