Job Summary
$16.40/hour + Part-Time County Benefits (20 hours a week)
Performs responsible delivery and mail service work by transporting books, library materials, mail, deposits, packages, boxes, equipment or supplies and performs other duties as assigned. Employee must exercise tact and courtesy in all communication with library users and the public. Reports to Circulation Services Director.
Responsibilities
• Drives a delivery van and oversees maintenance of same; performs transportation duties as assigned; loads and unloads books, bins, mail, collections, supplies, equipment, donations, etc. to and from the vehicle; assists in transporting items by hand or cart inside/outside the buildings; assists with transporting materials.
• Prioritizes daily agenda, plans route, sorts materials, and loads vehicle.
• Sorts, picks up and distributes books, delivery boxes, documents, mail, inter-office messages and library deposits to various library locality offices.
• Transports equipment and supplies to various locations.
• Maintains the appearance and cleanliness of the library vehicle, inspects vehicle regularly, cleans as necessary and schedules routine maintenance through James City County Fleet and Equipment as needed.
• Performs tasks of a Shelver Clerk including checking in library materials on automated system; changing the status of items on computer as needed. Checks and empties all book and audiovisual drops; clears tables and shelving carts of library materials.
• Sorts and shelves library materials; shelf reads to maintain shelf order; adjusts collection as needed to relieve overcrowding.
• Inventories stock of necessary supplies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma, and some experience in general clerical work.
• Must possess, or be able to obtain within 30 day so of hire, a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of excellent customer service.
• Skill in handling multiple priorities and organizing workload; sorting mail with accuracy and speed, operating mail office equipment, and making simple mathematical computations.
• Ability to maintain and secure confidential materials.
• Duties are performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions at various Williamsburg Regional Library locations; requires frequent heavy lifting and transporting materials; safely drives Library vehicle during all weather conditions.
• Performs work safely in accordance with department safety procedures and County Safety Program; operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work condition or practice to supervisor.
• May be required to report to work to serve customers during emergency conditions; may be assigned to report at a different time and location and to perform different duties as necessary.
