The Circuit Court Judge’s Office seeks a candidate to perform a variety of paralegal and advanced administrative support duties for the resident judge and substitute judges.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include maintaining the daily operations for the Circuit Court Judge’s Office; reviewing and preparing court orders, legal memoranda, documents, reports and correspondence; possessing a knowledge and expertise in Virginia law and functions of the Circuit Court; serving as a liaison within the legal community as well as the community as large; performing in a fast-paced setting and dealing with sensitive matters in both nature and timing; maintaining and managing the calendar for two (2) Circuit courtrooms; securing and scheduling substitute judges as needed; assisting the public by providing information and answering a variety of inquiries; purchasing office supplies, monitoring office expenditures, and assisting with the preparation of the office budget; exercising initiative and sound judgment in the performance of duties.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or paralegal certification preferred, and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in the court system and/or a law office, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Reviews divorce, adoption and name change files for compliance with Code of Virginia and Rules of Supreme Court of Virginia; prepares memoranda for the judge’s review regarding defects in divorce, adoption and name change files; drafts any necessary correspondence pertaining to these issues; and notifies judge of corrections/changes made so that final order may be entered.
• Sets all civil hearings with attorneys and/or pro se parties; updates case management system; reviews filings and prepares files for the civil dockets; receives and responds to inquiries from the general public, local bar members and attorneys’ staffs; refers inquiries to appropriate person when needed.
