Job Summary

$47,433 - $84,701 / year or higher DOQ + Full-Time County Benefits 

James City County Parks & Recreation, A CAPRA nationally accredited department, seeks an enthusiastic individual to perform experienced professional work in the planning, development, supervision, management, and evaluation of comprehensive county-wide special events and special interest camps, classes, and activities for varying groups, ages and interest levels within the County. Work schedule will be Monday-Friday, 8a.m.- 5p.m. with some evenings and weekends.

There are three levels of Program Coordinator distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee.

Program Coordinator I: $47,433 - $73,743
Program Coordinator II: $50,732 - $79,023
Program Coordinator III: $54,282 - $84,701

Responsibilities

• Provides effective supervision of assigned staff and volunteers including selection, employee relations, training, prioritizing and assigning work and related activities.
• Coordinates and manages multiple, year-round large- and small-scale community special events and numerous special interest classes and camps and facilitates the work and collaboration of event planning teams.
• Prepares, develops, and monitors the annual budget, performance measures and statistics, program and service evaluations, marketing efforts, and other daily administrative functions.
• Serves as a primary contact and liaison to County staff and community partners, represents the department on interagency councils, committees, community agencies and groups, acts in absence of Operations Manager.
• Serves as training resource for matters pertaining to special events and special interests programs and best practices in recreational settings.
• Assists in the development, coordinates, and oversees cooperative agreements and contractual relationships.

Qualifications:

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in recreation or related field, preferably from a National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) accredited college or university; and some experience in community recreation program planning, design, implementation and evaluation; and leading and supervising diverse staff and volunteers.
• Must possess, or be able to obtain within thirty (30) days of hire, a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria.
• Must possess, or be able to obtain within sixty (60) days of hire, certification in First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) from the American Red Cross.
• Knowledge of varying types of demographics and associated needs; the principles and practices of recreation administration and supervision; the principles and methods of program planning and evaluation; stages of growth and development and safety and health practices of varying ages groups and abilities; recreation and program procedures according to industry standards; leadership techniques, principles and procedures to assign work, schedule, supervise, train and evaluate the work of assigned staff.
• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service including setting and meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
• Skill in use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite; excellent customer service; and written and oral communication.
• Ability to work effectively in a team setting and with children, families, staff and community partners and contacts; develop and execute programs; work under minimal supervision; inspire enthusiasm and confidence among participants; establish and maintain courteous and effective working relationships with coworkers and participants; solve complex problems and work efficiently and effectively under pressure such as deadlines or emergencies; operate audiovisual equipment; conduct public presentations; conduct inventory and cash handling.

• Performs work in assigned office location, school sites, parks and indoor/outdoor recreation and county facilities; requires ability to travel among various work sites.
• Work schedule is generally Monday-Friday, 40 hrs/wk between the hours of 8:00 am- 5:00 pm, however must be able to work flexible schedules, including some early mornings, late evenings and weekends.
• May be required to report to work to serve customers during emergency conditions; may be assigned to report at a different time and location and to perform different duties as necessary.
• Requires ability to transport and lift necessary special event equipment and supplies.
