Job Summary

$54,282 / year or higher DOQ + Full-Time County Benefits 

Performs responsible/experienced skilled craft work inspecting and maintaining a variety of vehicles, specialized equipment, and engines. There are three levels of Automotive Technician distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee.

Responsibilities

• Performs responsible skilled craft work maintaining and repairing gasoline and diesel vehicles and heavy equipment, including ambulances, fire apparatus and various other equipment.
• Performs maintenance, repairs and diagnosis on various types of gas and diesel vehicles and a variety of other equipment.
• Performs air-conditioning, electrical, suspension and other major component repair on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Performs acetylene and electric welding, simple blacksmithing and fabricating.
• Completes work orders and notifies customers; maintains required documentation and log books.
• (Automotive Technician II and III) Instruct, train and assist other Technicians.

Qualifications:

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma; supplemented by courses in auto mechanics, engine repair or related field; considerable experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive and related equipment.
• Must be eligible to obtain Virginia Class A Commercial Driver’s permit within 30 days of hire and the license with combination endorsements: airbrakes and tanker within 6 months of hire and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria.
• Must possess or obtain within 6 months of hire a valid Virginia State Inspector’s License.
• Must possess or obtain within 6 months of hire a valid air-conditioning recovery certification.
• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service including setting and meeting quality standards for service, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other county employees and the public.
• Provides own hand tools.

There are two levels of Automotive Technician distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee.

Automotive Technician II: $54,282/year DOQ
Automotive Technician III: $58,095/year DOQ
