Transit Supervisor

Job Summary

$55,910 - $87,242 / year DOQ + Full-Time County Benefits 

This position performs skilled supervisory work to ensure the safe, efficient, and professional daily operation of WATA’s transit services. Responsibilities include supervising assigned staff, managing operational resources, and responding to equipment or personnel challenges in real time.

Responsibilities

• Supervise daily transit operations and assigned personnel, including scheduling, performance management, and employee relations.
• Ensure services are delivered safely, professionally, and on time; respond to and resolve customer and service-related concerns.
• Provide field supervision during service hours; respond to on-street incidents and off-bus issues as needed.
• Oversee bus fleet operation: ensure schedule and route adherence, proper vehicle signage, and driver compliance with safety and uniform standards.
• Coordinate with maintenance regarding fleet readiness, hazard reporting, and equipment issues.
• Conduct routine performance checks and accident investigations.
• Lead special projects and operational initiatives as assigned.
• Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred.
• Experience in transportation operations, including supervisory or lead worker roles.
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licensing & Certifications
• Must possess a valid Virginia Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger and air brake endorsements.
• Must maintain an acceptable driving record per James City County standards.

• Knowledge of transit operations, employee supervision, safety standards, and customer service principles.
• Familiarity with Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD), Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), and other transit systems preferred.
• Ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe manner and to adhere to time schedules.
• Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner, follow oral and written instructions, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to evaluate service conditions, solve problems under pressure, and uphold professionalism at all times.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
