Job Summary

$21.97 - $34.09/hour DOQ + Part-Time County Benefits

Position is 20 hours per week, regularly scheduled, with some nights and weekends required. This role provides reference and readers’ advisory services to the public, collaborates with other divisions to support overall library services, and delivers outreach services to the community in alignment with the adult outreach plan.

Responsibilities

  • Provides the public with the information and materials from the library's collections and other sources; teaches individuals and groups how to use library resources; recommends materials to read, view, or hear; recommends topics for reports and other assignments.
  • Uses electronic resources including online databases and the Internet; troubleshoots public computers and printers; monitors user activities in the library, handling problems as they occur.
  • Offers programs and services to external library patrons as part of the library’s outreach services.
  • Assists with library programs, including but not limited to leading book groups, conducting library tours, providing technical support for presenters, occasionally introducing presenter before a program; assists users in obtaining materials not owned by the library
    through interlibrary loan.
  • Attends staff development programs, workshops and conferences; serves on library committees; trains other staff as appropriate.
  • Prepares booklists, displays, and reference guides in print or on the Williamsburg Regional Library website; provides exam proctoring services to patrons.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree; experience in public library operations preferred.
    Must possess or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Virginia Driver’s License and have an acceptable driving record
    based on James City County’s criteria.
  • Knowledge of printed and electronic reference sources, library research techniques including online and other electronic reference
    sources, and library procedures.
  • Skill in use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite; oral and written communication.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with users of all ages in a pleasant and effective manner; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other library personnel; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; plan and organize daily work and special projects.

Job Locations and Conditions:

  • Work is performed at the Williamsburg Regional Library buildings and at selected outreach locations; works in both an office and at a public service desk; requires the ability to travel among the various library locations and other sites; position could be asked to operate mobile library services vehicles.
  • Duties are performed primarily in an office setting; operates computer keyboard and mouse and other standard office equipment.
  • Eligible for Intermittent and Temporary Telework.
  • Performs work safely in accordance with department safety procedures and the County Safety Program. Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work condition or practice to supervisor.
  • May be required to report to work to serve customers during emergency conditions. May be assigned to report at a different time and location and to perform different duties as necessary.
  • Must be able to work a varied schedule, including some nights and weekends.
